c. What’s the importance of food in this essay?
After reading this very sad story, I came to realize that food had a huge role in the relationship between him and his mother. In fact, food was basically the happiest time for the whole family. When it came to dinner time, the family gathered around the table and eat together and enjoyed each others company. This was the time where they could feel that the family is whole and they have each other during the good or bad. I felt that the food had a huge significance in this story because he described how he built his relationship with his mother and how he was always fond to learn all the different cooking techniques and having the ability to be one of the first taste testers while she was preparing the food. He showed a lot of interest in the process of preparing the meals and even though he was sent off to boarding school for some time, he still held on to the skills that he had learned from his mother as a way of appreciation for everything that she had done for him. A piece of her will forever be part of him in his cooking.
I believe that food has a major role with building relationships with your family. It is a special time that you get to share and bond with your loved ones. It is a time that you get to learn new things and share any interest with each other. I know that in my family, especially around the holidays, we always gather around the kitchen to help out and just have fun. Once all the food preparation is done then we all get to sit down around the table and just enjoy everything that we have and be thankful. Every time that we have a conversation with any family member, we always seem to remember the times that we all spent together around the kitchen table or when ever we all got together for a barbecue or pic-nick, no matter what we always remembered times that involved food. I can see how much of significance this is to the author as those times were the times that were most cherished, just being together.
Hi Jaime,
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you and I think that you have written a great response to this essay! I think that food creates great memories for a family, and it does always seem to bring happy thoughts to my head when I think of all the times that my family has gathered around the table for big meals. I would have to say that this is the case for this family in the essay as well, it gave the boy and his mother a special bond, and even though he went on to boarding school he still head on to the appreciation of his mothers cooking, even before the fact of knowing that his mother was sick, therefore you know that he was not cooking and taking on her legacy of cooking for her being sick it was truly his passion!!
Have a great week,
Emily
Hi Jamie,
ReplyDeleteI completley agree with you. Families and well people in general tend to bond over food. Eating together seems to be a great way to spend time with other and to socialize.

Hello Jaime! I really enjoyed reading your blog about the importance of the food. This reminded me of many good memories with my family. I also agree with you that most of my best memories originate from sitting around the table enjoying a good meal. Food overall has a very important role in society and it is a great way of socializing. I love getting dinner and lunch with the people we love because it always brings us closer together and is a great opportunity to catch up with friends.
ReplyDeleteHey Jaime,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you when you say food can be the happiest time for a family. We used to have dinner together and it was fun because we got to catch up and laugh. This story brings the happiness back when lee cooks dinner and takes his mothers place. That was the best time, dinner because it brought back memories.

(: Hi Jaime,
ReplyDeleteFood is definitely a major role in building relationships. Either with your family, or even with friends. Your family sounds just like mine, we love to reminiscence about the past. We look back a laugh at all those moments in the kitchen. Food is important, what's funny is we talk about food while we are eating food. I don't know if you do that, but we do all the time. Always thinking of what the next best dish will be.
